The Iddhi-pādas

The bases of psychic powers is an enigmatic set of four dhammas in the early Buddhist tradition. It is marked as an important set of mental factors but is not well understood. It is included in the well known grouping of 37 factors prescribed for cultivation and described as leading to awakening.

Engaging these energetically reveals their coherence.

The set is:

  • chanda-iddhipāda: drive as a base for psychic powers
  • viriya-iddhipāda: effort as a base for psychic powers
  • citta-iddhipāda: mind (i.e., facility in attaining jhānas) as a base for psychic powers
  • vīmaṃsā-iddhipāda: investigation as a base for psychic powers

At an energetic level, the set becomes coherent:

The energy of chanda-iddhipāda goes to the base of the spine and rises to the second chakra.

The energy of viriya-iddhipāda goes to the second chakra and rises to the throat.

The energy of citta-iddhipāda goes to the throat and rises to the brow.

The energy of vīmaṃsā-iddhipāda goes to the brow and rises to the crown.

Together, these qualities form a coherent set and again engage and develop the entire chakra system.
